Dobris
is situated in the Central Bohemia, about 40 km to the south-west

along the important trade route from Prague to Passau ( It was called
„Golden Path“) and its thick forests were rich in game. That attracted
the attention of rulers.
The king John of Luxembourg erected Vargac castle.
In the year 1630 Philipp of Mansfeld bouht Dobris.
In
the 40´s of the 18th century a castle (chateau) in baroque style was built
and until World War II it was the property of the noble family
of Colloredo – Mannsfeld. After 1945 it was used as the „House of Writers“.
After restitution (which followed „The Velvet Revolution in 1989) the chateau
with its French and English gardens were returned to the family of Mannsfeld.
The chateau is open to the public and it has a rich cultural life – town
museum, weddings, concerts, art exhibitions, restaurant.
Opposite
the chateau there is the church of the Holy Trinity which was built in 1797
(1791-1797).
In the 19th century the glove factory was founded by the Jewish population of Dobris. ( In the north of the town you can find the Jewish cemetery.)
The railway from Prague was finished in 1897. In Dobris there are only small factories, such as the glove factory, timber industry, the forest factory and others.
At
the centre of the main square there is the seat of the town office – the
town hall.
